The New Haven Fitness Challenge is a 12 week weight loss competition for CT women to motivate themselves and others to lose weight, get healthy and reduce obesity related diseases.

The CT Fitness Challenge is a weight loss challenge and support system to help CT women to lose weight and improve their health and wellbeing. The only side effect of this competition is a better body you’ll get along the way.
WHAT IS THE CONNECTICUT FITNESS CHALLENGE?
The New Haven Fitness Challenge is a12 week Weight Loss Contest for the residence of Connecticut to LOSE FAT and GAIN a healthy lifestyle. The Team with the greatest percentage of collective weight loss and has the most compelling lifestyle transformation questionnaire will WIN $3,000 to split between the 3 team mates.
WHO IS ELEIGIBLE TO COMPETE?
Eligibility requires competitor to be a residence of Connecticut at start of competition date, 18 years or older, and a client of Balance Fitness Studio for women throughout the entire competition.

Why is there a CT Fitness Challenge?
The Healthy People 2010 (HP2010) national health objectives include one to reduce the proportion of adults who are obese to 15% (objective 19-2) (1). Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. BMI is calculated using height and weight. For example, a 5-foot, 9-inch adult who weighs 203 pounds would have a BMI of 30, thus putting this person into the obese category.
According to data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), no state is on track to meet the Healthy People 2010 objective of 15 percent, and 30 states were 10 or more percentage points away from the objective. The Healthy People 2010 (HP2010) national health objectives include one to reduce the proportion of adults who are obese to 15 percent.
The prevalence of obesity among adults in Connecticut is 21.2% according to the CDC. That rates jumps by almost 5 points in New Haven County, where 25% of all adults are overweight or obese.
Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for:
•coronary heart disease
•high blood cholesterol
•osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and bone of joints)
•sleep apnea and other breathing problems
•some forms of cancer (breast, colorectal, endometrial, and kidney) Obesity is also associated with:
•complications of pregnancy
•hirsutism (presence of excess body and facial hair)
•stress incontinence (urine leakage caused by weak pelvic floor muscles)
•psychological disorders, such as depression
•increased surgical risk
